Help Us Tell Reston's Story

Reston can be the prism through which we examine the many facets of contemporary American culture...

Reston, like many suburban communities created after WWII, finds itself in the interesting position of balancing new development against the need to revitalize older neighborhoods, of welcoming ever increasing numbers of new residents and businesses while still wanting to maintain a small town atmosphere of civic partnership.

The Reston Historic Trust believes that in working together to understand the past we forge the collaborations that allow us to plan for the future.

Just as Reston served as an international model for urban planning and design in the 1960s, it can now serve as an incubator for projects and programs promoting community life and suburban revitalization. Pilot projects and programs developed in our search for a "useable past" can be applied to other communities throughout the region and across the nation.

A Community is more than a bunch of buildings.

The Reston Historic Trust has a dual role: preserving our sense of community and addressing change.

The Reston Historic Trust was founded in 1996 to sustain the special history of the award-winning, innovative, planned community of Reston.

A community-based non-profit, the Reston Historic Trust:

  • Operates the Reston Museum
  • Directs the Reston Revitalization Study
  • Sponsors the annual Langston Hughes Middle School oral history project
  • Documents the past and present of Reston
  • Works with the Planned Community Archives to preserve historical records
  • Collaborates with other community organizations to promote the social and economic vitality of Reston

The history of Reston and the dynamics that make it an enjoyable place to live and work are sometimes invisible to its large and varied population. Newly created, the Reston Historic Trust brings together residents, schools, civic and community groups, and local businesses to tell the story of our distinct and amazingly diverse community.
