| Reston Founder's Day |
| |
| Each year, Reston Historic Trust presents a celebration of Reston’s founder, Robert E. Simon, Jr., on the first weekend after his April 10 birthday. Established on Reston’s 40th anniversary in 2004, the event also recognizes the community’s pioneers. Local dignitaries and residents gather at Lake Anne Village Center, the historic heart of Reston, for special presentations, entertainment, an installation of commemorative bricks on the plaza, and an open reception at Reston Museum. |

The first Founder's Day was initiated in 2004, in Reston's 40th anniversary
year. In celebration of the 90th birthday of Reston's founder, Robert E.
Simon, Jr. (the R E S in Reston) a bronze figure of Mr. Simon seated on the
plaza was unveiled. The statue has become affectionately named 'Bronze Bob'.
The Reston Historic Trust (RHT), a community-based non-profit organization,
was founded in 1996 to sustain the unique history of the award-winning,
innovative, planned community of Reston. The RHT serves the dual role of
preserving a sense of community and addressing change. Through displays and
programs at the Reston Museum, the RHT is using the past to understand the
present and plan for the future. The Reston Museum and Shop, located at
Reston's Lake Anne Village Center, is open Wednesday through Sunday from
noon until 5 p.m. and offers children's art workshops, walking tours,
community exhibits and archives, commemorative bricks, pottery and hand
crafts. Public membership in the Reston Historic Trust helps to support the
Museum's programs.

U.S. House of Representatives Dedications
July 25, 1962, record was made in the 87th U.S. Congress, to recognize Reston as a modern satellite community that planners of the times only dreamt about. [...planned variations in density will offer real variety instead of the homogeneity of "look-alike houses and look-alike families."] This came on the eve of a public hearing by the Fairfax County Planning Commission for proposed zoning changes and request for endorsement of Reston's Master Plan. Reston was again recognized by Congress some forty years later on its milestone anniversaries. |
