This all-wood home was built on Lake Thoreau in 1978. It was sponsored by the American Wood Council. Architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen and the builder Warren Katz, created a home with built-in furniture, more than 2,000 feet of decking, multipurpose rooms, and a heating system underneath the floors.

Originally, Lake Thoreau and Lake Audubon were going to be one lake named after Robert E. Simon, Jr.’s mother, Elsa. Upper south lake was called Wyeth, then Thoreau. In the end, two lakes were made.
